RAID1: how to measure the temp of the disks?

L

hi folks,
does anyone have a suggestion how I can monitor the temp of the disks?

Everest can't... they only access disks which are not in an array... but for
sure people with RAID (disk mirroring) must have a way to monitor the
temperature.

TIA!

Can I ask why you care?

In most cases, if you monitor the case temp you will have a good idea of
overall drive temp averages, or you can get a case that has a movable
sensor and place it near the drives.

Are you trying to determine when a drive is about to fail?

If the drives are Hitachi (IBM), there is a feature tool that will give
the HDD
temperatures. Others I don't know about.

What type of RAID1? SCSI, SATA or IDE based? What type of RAID controller?

Hi Leythos,
I would like to know if everything is ok... I have triggers for the CPU but
that is exactly what doesn't matter as Pentium4 have anyhow a self
regulating mechanism... but if the fan near the disks stops then the temp
will raise and there is no way to know until there is a failure...

When you say "case temperature"... you mean the motherboard? not sure I have
a case sensor... I have a motherboard temp (as reported by Everest)

thanks!

Hi Yves,
I have RAID1, SATA based and I am using the onboard Silicon Image controller
3112.

Any suggestion?
thanks!
