RAID and XP Pro

I manage a TINY office which is inside a BIG company.
There are 3 of us. The BIG company supplies Exchange, Networking, etc...
We are now being told that they do not want to have some of our data stored
on their server. HENCE I need to build a "server".
This machine needs to be my workstation as well as hold the shared files the
3 of us use. It does not need to be accessable from the outside world. (At
least not until BIG company allows us to use VPNs, as they really will freak
if I were to try and enable a VPN or even a dial up access to this "server".)

What I do need to is to make sure we don't loose the data. The goal is to
save our client records in an Electronic Document Retention database. The EDR
supplier recommended that we implement RAID 1.

However, I can not determine if I can use XP Pro and enable RAID 1, or if I
obtain XP Small Business Server if I will be able to use THAT operating
system as my workstation. I do know that 90% of the features of XP Small Bus
Server would never be used here.

Help!!!!

As long as you don't expect to exceed the ten connection limit then Windows
XP Professional will work fine for your data store. Use a hardware solution
for your raid.

I thought the 10 connection limit was to XP Home, not Professional. Also..
how are those connections counted? Per PC, Per user, Per file? I can't find
any where where that is discussed on the Tech Net.

XP Home has a five connection limit. This article may also help.

Dave,

You are being an immence help! Thanks for the pointer, that did explain
"Session" very clearly.

While I don't currently expect to exceed the 10 connection limit...

What would happen if we did obtain the XP Small Business Server software?
Would I still be able to use that as a "workstation".

Thanks!

Are you asking about SBS? No I wouldn't recommend it as a workstation. Also
I believe it needs to be a domain controller.

They can tell you more here.

RAID 0 and 1 are usually configured for desktop pcs,RAID 5 or 10 are usually
found on server boards, plus they offer more than the standard 2 SATA drive
limitations of RAID 0 or 1
