RAID 5 - Create Global Hotspare

Gabe Matteson

I have two RAID5 arrays, each 800GB. Previously each had 400GB of storage
space, last night I installed another 400GB on each of the RAID5 arrays.
However, I forgot to configure one of the new hard drives as a global
hotspare.... (Dell Array Manager). I would like to take one of the drives
offline and convert it to the global hotspare... Is there a way to do this
without losing data on the RAID5 array? (there's 300GB free of space....)
Thanks,
- Gabe

I highly doubt it but I would give dell tech support a call before I tried if
I was you.

This is not really a Windows question that I can see. If you are using a
Dell array (you did not say what the hardware was), I can tell you that Dell
is VERY good about supporting their arrays, even if you no longer have it
under a service plan. They have bailed us out several times and I highly
recommend them. 1-800-822-8965. Get in contact with Dell Storage Support.
