RAID 1 and P4C800E-D

Nothing is said in the manual that the Intel South Bridge RAID controller
can support RAID 1---since documentation sometimes leaves things out--DOES
the Intel RAID controller support RAID 1 (not the Promise Controller)??

Yes RAID 1 is supported. Intel added the support after the fact.
Originally the the bios / drivers only supported RAID 0 and much of the
documentation for these motherboards was already produced.

If you take a look at the description (More...) for the IAA35R.zip download
at the link below, you will see that it states RAID 1 is supported. Also
note the bios dependancy and all comments in "More... ".

You can also look at this doc - this version released July2/2004.
You may find this doc annoying, but it is a lot better than when
it was first released.

The new IAA actually has a help file this time - it is brief, comprehensive
& to the point.

To make full use of the V4.1 IAA, one needs that latest ICH6R (with dual
raid ability, matrix, hot standby facility) which is only on the new LGA
family mobos. Existing bios version and driver version will be out of synch
with the capabilities of the new IAA, but this does not matter as it detects
the bios (IE raid firmware) version and driver version and adapts its
capabilities to the combination. The System Report now gives an item and
version break down of all components of the RAID system - you now have no
doubt about the bios version support, driver version etc.

I have installed the IAA to see if there were any advancement on alert
capabilities IE email, pager, or anything else, but alas it still only has a
flashing task bar icon with a balloon popup.

According to the documentation, the Windows 2003 Server support is for the
Intel 6300ESB Serial ATA RAID Controller only unfortunately.

May be next time.

Justin,

Thanks, the paging side of things is the easy part. The parts the vendors
tend to hide are the details about how to detect or be notified of RAID
failures by the RAID controller. Hooking into the event log is a
possibility, so would using standard SCSI commands to enumerate devices on
the bus, but then I think this side of things should be provided by the
vendor of the RAID controller.
