Radeon 9600 Pro sucks with Catalyst

Hi fellows:

I have a Radeon 9600 Pro. It's awful slow when booting XP. When I removed
the catalyst, I noticed some improvement in speed as the computer boots.
Anybody else has this sluggishness with the 9600?

I've been using Radeons for a few years now and I am wondering if it's time
to try Nvidia? Thanks for any suggestions..

It's not the 9600 causing your slow booting, it's the Catalyst
crapware.

Remove the old drivers and Catalyst crap, install just the display
driver then install ATI Tray Tools.

There maybe some other factors involved in the slow boot up.
Try clearing off all ATI software and reloading only what you need might
help.
Go to the bios and turn off things you don't need, like parallel and serial
ports, etc.
Reloading/updating the motherboard chipset drivers might also help.

I'm currently using an ATI 9600 PRO AIW, been thinking of
replacing it with a Nvidia 6600GT.

Just out of curiosity Bill: Why did you refer him back to the ATI website
and the Catalyst crapware if yourself disaprove of it?

Because, if you take the time to read down the page, you will see
where you can download the driver only, without the Catalyst software.

Install that and ATI Tray Tools.

We truely dont know if ATI is really updating those video drivers, they
could just change the version and date code in the new drivers. But, there
really old drivers.

ATI has been really slow on putting an UPDATED and FIXED, "MMC" version on
the web. Last update was 5/17/2005. Even thats NOT fixed too many bugs (MMC
9.08).

It just tells me that ATI will not be updating the buggy MMC program
anymore, So, it's time to switch to "Nvidia".

I am thinking the same. I am getting tired of the unpredictable and
unreliable software ATI bundles with these cards. As I said before, I've use
ATI products in the past and really, I wasn't all that impressed with that
stuff, there just has to be better product without one shelling out over
$200 for a card.

You could say the same about Nvidia drivers couldn't you?

Nvidia is not with out their problems. Try hanging out in the Nvidia
group for a while.

Btw, I own ATI, Nvidia, Matrox, S3, and 3DFX cards. They've all got
their quirks.

Also try using a program called Driver Cleaner Pro.
It's good for cleaning out leftover drivers (video, sound, etc.)
