A while ago I "upgraded" from an nVidia mx 440 128 mb of ram (vga only
output) to a Radeon 9250.
The Radeon's vga output is awful, the dvi has sharp graphics, but the text
outpout lacks sharpness--very much inferior to the nVidia's text quality.
I tried "tweaking" gamma, contrast and brightness on the Radeon, I get minor
improvements.
Before I put back the nVidia card, are there other tweaks I am missing.

I don't know what you use the P/C for app wise.
The 9250 is quite an old card-- (2004 or so)
I would think that there are much newer and better cards available at a
reasonable price.
I used to use ATI cards, and quit because I had to much trouble with the
drivers and compatability.
When you switch between Nvidia and ATI cards, it's usually necessary to go
thru a process of using the "standard" Microsoft video drivers so that the
old drivers can be removed and the new ones installed. This is usually
documented in the driver install instruction.

As to the "tweaks"-- There are driver mfr/card specific things to do, and
possibly Microsoft DX settings. Since you mentioned text, windows has some
optimization that may help with some displays and text blurring.
What type and make/model of display are you using?
Do you have a monitor/LCD digital interface or an analog one?
