Aloha all. New to Vista. When I want to shut down, I am offered many
options. Is there a way to have this default to Shut Down, instead of Sleep?
Thank you.

If the button on the Start Menu is yellow, it is set to put the computer
into Sleep mode.

You can change this to Shut Down the computer like this:

Open Control Panel/Power Options. Under whatever plan you have selected,
Click Change Plan Settings. In the next window, click Change Advanced Power
Settings. Expand the Power Buttons and Lid. Expand the Start Menu Power
Button. CVhange the option from Sleep to Shut Down.

The Start Menu power button will change to a red color and shut down the
computer when pressed.

Try this:
*Add a quick shutdown shortcut to your desktop.

Do you get annoyed with that extra step you need to take when you want
to shut down
your computer? You know, that ugly little blue box (in XP) that pops
up and asks a
second time if you REALLY want to shutdown. It annoyed the hell out of
me so I created
an icon for immediate and quick shutdown. Here's how you create one:

Windows XP only:

1) Right-click any empty location on your desktop.
2) Click New, Shortcut.
The Create Shortcut Wizard appears.
3) In the Type the Location of the Item box, type: shutdown -s -t 0

It's important that you put spaces before each hyphen, that you have
no spaces after
each hyphen, and that you use a zero at the end.

Now you will have a shortcut on your desktop that will quickly
shutdown your computer
when you double click it.

*Change the icon for the shutdown shortcut.

Now you have your shortcut, but it's a bland little default icon.
Let's jazz it up and change
the icon to the proper shutdown red icon.

1) Right click on the Shutdown shortcut icon
2) click "Properties"
3) click "Change icon...".
4) It will popup an alert, ignore it by clicking "Ok" button. You
will get a list of icons to
choose from: Spot the red Shutdown icon?
5) Select it and click "OK" button twice. Done.
Now you have a nice red shutdown icon on your desktop. You can use
this method to change any of your desktop icons.

Many thanks. Did the trick!

No, you didn't get credit because your directions did not work on my system.
Control Panel/Power Options/Change Advanced did not exist. A step or two was
left out.
Thanks.
