For some reason my Quick Launch icon that used to open my desk top over the
top of whatever window was on my screen has now defaulted to a window from
Windows Explorer which shows the desktop directory in Windows Explorer
format.
How do I convert the focus of the icon back to the desktop proper with
background photo etc.

Right click on the icon and select:-

Send to|Notepad

The file that opens should be as follows:-

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

If it is not then change it to that and save. Make sure that the name
of the file remains at:-

Show Desktop.scf

and that it is saved into this folder:-

C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Otherwise I don't know what!!
