Quick Launch problem

sc0ri0n

Hello,

A friend of mine is having a problem with enabling Quicklaunch in Win2K Pro.
She said she came in one morning and found that Quick Launch toolbar
disppeared.

When she rigt clicks taskbar > Toolbars > Quick Launch, she gets "can not
create toolbar" error. We checked the profile and E:\Documents and
Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick
Launch exists.

Any ideas what may be wrong?

Thanks
Adil

What happens if you logon as a new user? (create a new account in 'Users and
Passwords').

I have another post with the same problem. This volume is
starting to build on this issue.

To answer your question, I cannot create the toolbar under
2 different users as well as administrator. It makes no
difference.

You might try a new user account.

I can not try without another user at last until tomorrow but John Gagnon
already said that it makes no difference. I am trying to locate any MS
article on this but nothing yet...

Thanks,

OK, but I didn't see where he tried a *new* user account. It sounds like the
wave of some sort of new spyware/malware to me.

I just created a New User and it made no difference, I get
the same error, "Cannot creat toolbar."

I think your right about the Spyware/Malware. I'm using
each of the following:

- SpywareBlaster
- SpywareGuard
- SpyBot S & D
- Ad-Aware 6
- McAfee 8
- Zone Alarm Firewall
- Free Surfer Pop-up Blocker

I've also used other utilities to view/fix problems:

- CWShredder
- HighjackThis
- BHODemon
- HostsFileReader
- LSP Fix
- No-ADS proxy auto configuration script

At present my system is 100% clean according to each of
the apps/tools, and its running without incident of
spyware/adware/malware/etc. Unfortunately, I think the
damage is done with respect to the Quick Launch Toolbar.

Can anyone identify the Registry items pertaining to this
toolbar in a known good, functioning system? Maybe the
entries could be listed in a reply, at least for
verfication purposes.

I just tried creating a new user account and restarting
with that new user account. I received the same error
message: Cannot Create Toolbar.

Thanks

I have been following your discussion of this problem
because I have the same problem. None of the suggested
solutions have helped including the latest below. This
problem occurred after allowing my grandson to use the
computer and finding it badly infected with spyware and
adware.

Mine's Fixed!
Here's what I did:
1. I installed Norton Firewall to monitor internet
activity.
2. Norton first identified access attempt by a program
called ABBYY.
3. I was able to uninstall this using Control Panel.
4. During reboot Norton identified access attempt by a
program called "vwskunvr.exe" and executed by the registry.
5. I blocked the attempt and then, using the registry
editor, I deleted vwskunvr.exe from the "run" command in
the registry. (beware of editing registry)
6. I then rebooted the system.
7. Next I right clicked the task bar, selected "Tool Bars"
and "Quick Launch".
8. The Quick Launch tool bar displayed.

Unfortunately, I can't tell which program was causing the
problem but, as predicted, it was a spyware/adware
program. Good luck to the rest of you.

D

Dave Patrick

That's interesting. I can't imagine spyware registering a program for
removal. But the "vwskunvr.exe" certainly is suspicious. Thanks for letting
us know.

I found this post just a couple of days ago and it worked
for several people having this problem:

I've had success in overcoming this error by running a
repair on IE6.
This allowed me to add the user's toolbar back to the
taskbar. This
was on a W2k machine.

*****
IE6 Repair (for Windows 2000)

Click Start/Run/

rundll32.exe setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

When the dialog pops up, choose "Repair Internet Explorer".

Reboot PC.
*******
Log in, and right-click the taskbar, choose Toolbars/Quick
Launch.

This seems to have worked for me. It appears that the
original
problem was due to spyware/registry interaction.
Hopefully this
helps. I tried all other suggestions from the postings
here and at
Microsoft. The IE repair did the trick.

Regards,
Mike
