Quick Launch Icons Disappear

Every once in a while, my quick launch icons will disappear after a hard
boot.

I keep several icons on the quick launch because I prefer to work with them
that way rather than on the desktop (I keep those hidden).

I know how to get them back -- what seems to happen is that for whatever
reason the tool bars I use become unchecked on the task bar menu. I can
recheck them and they come back just fine, though not in the order that I
had them in (they come back alphabetically). They also come back as smaller
icons than what I had them set to and it is often difficult and time
consuming to get them the size I wish again.

Is there a setting that I can use to stop this from happening or is it an
idiocyncracy of XP (this occurred even before SP2) that I have to live with?

Thanks for the response. I appreciate all the help I've gotten here.

I downloaded that tool, ran some of the features and liked how it worked.
It remains to be seen if solved any of my problems since they're
intermittent, but it's nice to have a tool to keep trying with. As far as
the resizing of my icons, all I needed to do was unlock my taskbar and
change the icon size in view. It pays to click and look at everything, even
when nothing is apparent.
