What is Quick Folders?
Quick Folders is useful tool for quick access to your favorite and recent
folders. With Quick Folders tool you do not need to expand each time the
same multi-level folders structure to reach your files. All you need is to
add new items in a list of your favorite folders, like you do in the
Internet browser. As to recent folders - it will be done automatically.

I would use it if it could be used inside other applications. For
example, when you use the "file open" command in Word, it would be
nice to be able to select predetermined folders. This program does not
appear to do this. It appears to operate exclusively from the system
tray.

I believe I have seen such a program a long time ago.... but it was not
free...

You are probably thinking of Dialog Helper, PDDLGHLP.EXE, which came
with Powerdesk Pro 5.0 from Ontrack. Not freeware but a very useful
program.

Hello,

For example, when you use the "file open" command in Word,
it would be nice to be able to select predetermined folders.

maybe try DM2. Unfortunately just the example you gave is an
app that uses other than the system wide dialogs and so cannot
be extended this way :-(

http://dm2.sourceforge.net/

Another program I know is German only, but has another concept
which works in more apps, it expands context menu of files and
folders, so a right click in virtually every file open dialog
(they claim 99%) can reach it and let you change to your favorite
directories.

from its description it sounds as if *this* Quick Folders (PL2004 PL2003
PL2002) might do what you want:

Program: Quick Folders
Author: Alexey Rubtsov
Ware: Freeware

<q>
Quick Folders v1.0.1: This utility keeps track of folders recently
accessed through common open/save dialogs. Most Win9x/NT applications
use standard system dialogs when there's a need to get name for a file
being opened or saved. Quick Folders adds a small button to a common
file dialog, which gives you access to the list of locations (folders)
of recently opened (or saved) files.
</q>

that hooks the saveas dialog, very useful program but it doesn't work
properly in xp
but xp has recent folders and documents list anyway

Terry is right. I installed Quick Folders on Windows XP and verified
it does not add anything to the "Save As" dialog box in Windows
applications. The only place it shows up is in the system tray.

I have installed and tested this and it works as described, you can add
favorite folders in a list available via the lightning icon in the save
dialog box.

I think there is another alternative in the program
windows powerpro, which can be set to make save and open dialog boxes
bigger, and can save the last 10 or more locations.

Powerpro is a little complicated to test and use, because it is so
powerful and has so much extra features. I have a memory of being able
to set up a number of favorite locations in addition to a number of
recent folders, but I'm not sure about it.

Perhaps Dirkey NTXP will fulfill your needs:

Good to know. Thanks Terry. I thought the app might work on Win2K and
XP. The web page says "Changes: Now runs on WinNT. Hook procedure bugs
are fixed."

Hi George,

There are (at least) two programs named "Quick Folders". I believe
you're referring to the Quick Folders at:
http://www.sitex.com.ua/en/products/qfolders/index.htm
rather than the one by Alexey Rubtsov that can be found here:
http://www.simtel.net/product.php?id=13734

Me culpa..it seems it does work. Nonetheless Xp recent folders does the same
thing.
On Pre XP I found it _very_ useful if you are saving/opening from different
directories.

It does sayWindows 95/98/ME
When I first tried it on XP before it didn't work but just tried it again on
SP2 it _does_ work.
There is always a good chance my configuration does not reflect general
reality.

On 98 and ME when it was running a richedit bug surfaced on some machines,
large
richedits ( thats the builtin 'rich text' handler) didn't handle large
documents well,
it also surfaced for other apps that hooked the standard dialogs..os black
magic going bad somewhere.
I just ran a test for that on XPProSp2..no problems in
evidence..here..now..this boot.

Thanks for all the help with this app. Much appreciated. :)
