Questions about date and time when copying files

When I copy a file from one location to another, how is the date
and time supposed to be affected? I mean is the file created
during a copy? Is it modified during a copy? Should these dates
change during when simply copying the file from one folder to
another? I suspect that the last access time might be the only
time that is updated, but the creation and modification dates
should remain intact. Is that correct?

If you copy a file from "Folder 1" to "Folder 2"
the "created date" reflects the current date.
The "modified date" remains the same. I am curious as to
why it would matter unless you are trying to determine if
someone is messing around on your computer or if you want
to know if someone can tell if you were messing around on
theirs.

I'm looking for a way to tag the creation date to a specific
time and date when I put files on a CDRecordable disk.

I'm looking to tag the milliseconds and microseconds as
version numbers... It just doesn't seem possible right at
the moment.

Wouldn't it be easier to use the "Save as..." command. You
could then give the file a name based on the date and time
and then burn them to the CD. Perhaps that won't work for
what you are doing, but that is how I would do it.

Good Luck,

Save As ? You lost me there. I'm copying the file from one
location to another. Touching the file dates and times, but
I'm running into a problem when I put them on the CD. I
guess I can adjust the time/date of system right before the
copy, but to get it to work 100% correctly I'm going to
have to encode the copy command myself.

I guess that's easy enough to do.

1) save time
2) start timer
3) change time to designated command line time
4) copy file1
5) change time to designated command line time
6) copy file 2
....
Easy enough to do. Would be a whole lot nicer to be
able to touch the times on the CD though. Will have to
check that. Thanks!

I thought there was a problem with my machine, but one of
the folders I looked at for some reason had the Creation Date
up top for the details instead of the Modification Date.

So that brings up another question which I'll ask in a brand
new message.
