My next project involves creating the illusion of someone coming from the
far middle horizon and moving closer and closer towards the viewer until
the subject is so close then disappears. To create this illusion of
movement from the middle background towards the middle foreground, I need
to be able to place each picture dead center of each slide, so that each
picture WILL NOT sway from center as the subject appears to move forward.
Is there a really easy way to center each picture so I can accomplish this?

Sure. This is where the guidelines really make positioning easy.

First, display the guidelines:
View => Grid & Guidelines => dialog box
Make sure the guidelines are in the center of the slide. Use click and drag
to position the lines on the 0 point of the rulers (if the rulers are not
visible, then you can display them using View => Ruler)

Now, when you insert the picture, and align the center handles to the
guidelines. At the four corners and the middle of the top, bottom and
middle of both sides of the picture, there should be a dot. There are the
handles. By aliening the center of the sides and top on the guideline you
will have the picture exactly centered.

Use PowerPoint's align tools. Click the picture. Click the Draw menu on the
Drawing tool bar, and go to Align or Distrbute. Make sure Relative to Slide
is checked. Click Align Center and then click Align Middle.

If you do this a lot, you could drag the Align or Distribute menu into the
slide area to work with it. Or, better yet, you could record a simple macro
as you do the alignment and then hit it every time you want another object
centered.
