Question re security

I intend to format and reinstall XP HE on my computer soon. I have SP2 on
CD, which I will install immediately after HE.

I have Norton AV & Internet Security Suite programs on CD, which again, I
will install - but my question is, how do I keep myself safe and secure,
whilst I connect to Symantec to obtain the appropriate updates and
definitions?

Jim;
Do not physically make the network connection until AFTER the firewall is
enabled:

That will keep you safe while you update everything else necessary.

Do not open any mail, surf the internet etc until all antivirus, firewall,
Windows Updates all with appropriate updates are installed and running
properly.
