Hi...

Having pretty slow start up. From the list of startup programs below, could
someone please advise ONLY the one's I need. Just got a new Dell and am
trying to weed through the mounds of "stuff" they so kindly loaded.

Happy Mardi Gras to you as well. Only went to one ball this year....a sign
of old age..

How are you & thanks...

Hey Kelly......btw..went to your page and read all the articles like clean
boot and the other msconfig options, but can I pick and choose what starts
vs. wiping them all??

Thanks again....

Are all those mcaffee entires (5) listed in msconfig/startup? I would think
about opening up mcafee and trying to turn some of those off (unless you're
extremely paranoid). If you're not using the Sonic DLA (drive letter access)
I would turn that off. That Sun entry is useless. That's a start.

Hey Homer... Yeah, I installed the free trial McAfee that came with
Dell...it loaded like 2 BS products that are useless. Just want scan and
firewall. Any idea which one simply starts the program...and that's it?
Maybe the virusscanonline/mcvsshld.exe??

Thanks for your help on a stupid question!

I would do it all the turning on/off through mcafee prog. That's the way to
tell which does what. And it's not stupid to ask an honest question. It's
stupid not to ask and just do the Al Bundy.

Presuming you mean in MSConfig, startup page and *not* MSINfo
DESKTOP desktop.ini NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Startup

Not needed. In fact I would delete the desktop.ini files from the
related folders under those Profiles in
C:\Documents and settings\account\Startmenu\Startup
HotKeysCmds c:\windows\system32\hkcmd.exe All Users
Will be addons provided by the maker. Do you use them?
IgfxTray c:\windows\system32\igfxtray.exe
System tray icon for the FAX service, doubtful if you need it
IntelMeM c:\program files\intel\modem event monitor\intelmem.exe
Probably little use
MCAgentExe c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exe
MCUpdateExe c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcupdate.exe
Would not have McAfee software any where near the machine
MPFExe c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\person~1\mpftray.exe
Don't know - but another system tray item
Microsoft Office c:\progra~1\micros~4\office10\osa.exe
Office search assistant. If you use it, keep it, otherwise disable in
Word's own options
Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders c:\progra~1\common~1
Similar - options in Works
QuickTime Task "c:\program files\quicktime\qttask.exe
Apple's QuickTime display program. This is difficult to get rid of
other than by uninstalling the program altogether. But see below, re
iTunes
SoundMAXPnP c:\program files\analog devices\core\smax4pnp.exe
May be necessary support for your sound card, maybe just another
information about it. Try unchecking and see if things still work in
that area
SunJavaUpdateSched c:\program files\java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe
UpdateManager "c:\program files\common files\sonic\update
Automatic checks for updates by these items. Best disabled in their own
settings, unless you *want* them to check for updates at every boot
(which is at best a good idea only with broadband)
VSOCheckTask "c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcmnhdlr.exe
VirusScan Online c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsshld.exe
See above on McAfee
dla c:\windows\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe
The run time for you to use the DLA CD burning software. Leave that one
(unless you do not use the method and uninstall DLA)
iTunesHelper c:\program files\itunes\ituneshelper.exe
For getting Itunes from the web in conjunction probably with
mmtask c:\program files\musicmatch\musicmatch jukebox\mmtask.exe
and also the QuickTime above

My hi only meant hi back via your post. Sorry for the confusion of my sig.
That said, breaking down msconfig for a user, is system specific in most
cases and takes a great deal of work. However, you mentioned msinfo32 which
is great deal different. Hope all goes well!)
