I am buying a Firewire 800 ext drive to use with XP.
Can someone please tell me whether regular Windows PCI slots are 32 or 64
bit ?
Thnx.

It has nothing to do with Windows, it has to do with your
motherboard.

That being said, what does a Firewire drive (which does
not use PCI) have anything to do with PCI slots?

I think they mean the Firewire add-in card is PCI. Most PCs do not come
with Firewire built into the motherboard, you have to buy a card, hence
the PCI question.

Quite right. The card's maker says that transfer speed will be reduced
from 800 (in a 64-bit slot) to 400 Mb/s if plugged
into a 32-bit PCI slot.......hence my question.

Here you go:

PCI 32 bits 33 MHz 132 MBps
PCI 64 bits 33 MHz 264 MBps
PCI 64 bits 66 MHz 512 MBps
PCI 64 bits 133 MHz 1 GBps
