Question for Epson R800 or R1800 owners...

Can this class of epson printers, which comes with that "Gloss
optimizer" cartridge, (the cart on far right, which leaves a coating of
some sort over printing) print on glossy paper- and I mean any glossy
paper, not special inkjet gloss.

For instance if you tore a page out of a glossy magazine and tried to
print on it, over the existing offset printing, would it "take" or is
it wet and smudgey when you touch it after printing, as would typical
inkjet ink on gloss. Anyone ever print on gloss, or willing to try this
on one page...before we buy the R1800? Would be appreciated, otherwise
you can buy a R1800 on ebay cheap in a few weeks....Thanks.

No. The ink would smear all over, even though it is pigment ink. You
can /try/ printing an spraying it, if you're lucky it will come out
acceptable. No inkjet can print on non-coated papers, not even the
Durabrite ones. For more expensive printed glossy magazines like
National Geographic, the ink would probably bead up. For cheaper ones
with thinner paper, it would probably soak in and wrinkle.

Hi,

Fenrir Enterprises is correct. I have used several printers to print on
off-set paper including the R300 and R800. The results are pretty bad.

I don't think so. AFAIK, the Gloss Optomiser is not to print onto
non-inkjet glossy papers, but to gloss printing on non glossy inkjet
compatible paper.

Now, if you could replace the gloss optimiser substance with some
substance that will pass through the GO portion of the printer, adhere
to your glossy paper, and accept inkjet ink, you might have something.
