question about virus scanners

I just noticed something after running both NAV and AVG.

AVG finished scanning one of my comps and it only said 51k files over 2
hours 40 mins. Meanwhile NAV is still going through program files and it's
up to 130k files.

How reliable can AVG be if it says it scans your whole drive, yet shows a
signifanctly lower number of files scanned?? I don't understand.

It depends on how the scanners are set up. Some of the do not scan
every single file while others do. Some only scan .zip, .exe, .dll
etc.

Go into each of the application's control panels and see how they are
set up (do a comparision). I would bet a wooden nickle this is why
you see such a big difference in numbers.
