question about using Norton

Casey

My friend has a new computer well it's almost 3 months old and it came with
the 3 months trial version of Norton Internet Security. I've been lurking
here looking for advice about a free AV program for her, and haven't made up
my mind yet. I have a Norton trial that came with my new computer about one
year ago but I've never used it as I already had a paid AV which I
installed. Would I be able to install my trail one for her until we decide.
Many thanks,
Casey.

I have been thinking about AVG and Avast, some of my friends use AVG without
problems, but someone else I know was infected with 10 viruses that AVG
didn't pick up and she was in big trouble and she said she had all her
updates, so I'm confused. I read some good things about both, I use Norton
and never had a problem but then some here don't like that either, very
confusing. Anyway, we have a couple of weeks before her trial runs out,
that'
s why I was wondering if I could use my trial Norton that I never needed to
use,
thanks very much,
Casey.

so far nod32 is he best if every av i had. updates every day, huge virus
databse, kills fast etc. norton always has been good but the updates and
virus kills are not as good. avg, i havent tryed it but i heard its good.

Evidence like that can be very misleading. Anyway - being infected with
that many viruses says more about the user than it does about their
choice of AV software.

The two main complaints about Norton are how it drags down the system
with its bloat, and the difficulty when trying to remove it. If I were
you, I would go ahead and use Norton - but then I wouldn't be too
concerned about drag.

Looks to me like that would be the best option.

If you have it on a cd, go ahead and install it. It may have a license number
with it. Be sure to bring it along.
Make sure you uninstall the present one first, reboot and then install Norton.
After any required reboots, use the live-update feature to bring it up-to-date.
Norton, in my opinion, gets a worse rap than it really deserves.

I don't know all of what is involved in the Norton Internet Security package,
but if it includes a Norton Firewall, and you uninstall it, be sure to enable
the one in WinXP, if that is the OS she is using.

Otherwise you can use one of the free firewalls that are available.

Another thought is that MS offers a free one year trial of an EZtrust (I think
that's right) security package which includes a firewall and anti-virus.

Thank you very much for all that information, much appreciated,
I will go ahead and install the trial version of Norton for the 3 months
anyway, and then maybe install the MS one for the next year.for my friend.
Many thanks,
Regards,
Casey

I used Norton for about 3-4months, deleted it, slowed p.c down big time,
Used AVG for about a year had some problems with it, updates mainly, now
using Avast so far no problems, seems to pick up what Norton and AVG missed.

good luck

Thanks everyone, I was at my friends place and installed the newsgroups I
use and I answered you from there hence the "Molly" name I just saw that. I
am pretty sure I will tell my friend to install Avast as that seems to be
the one that nobody complains about, I'll give her the option though about
the CD I have of Norton for the 3 months also the one from MS.
Many thanks for all your help,
Casey.
