Question about ping times

P

Paul.

I have 2 PC's connected to a 1MB ADSL connection via a router.

PC 1 has XP Pro, 3.2 GHz P4. PC 2 running XP Home, 1.7 GHz P4

When both PC's connect to the same game server (Wolfenstein - Enemy
Territory) both show the same servers to connect to, as expected. However,
PC 1 shows much lower pings for all these servers than PC 2. Also, when
connected to one of these servers, PC 1 has a much lower ping than 2.

If you understood my ramblings, what would effect the ping times on these 2
machines? I had assumed it was mainly dependant on the internet connection.

Many thanks.

Paul.

First, ping the servers from the server in question from a command prompt on each machine. I believe the Enemy Territory application is measuring total latency from, through the application, the driver, the adapter, and your ISP.

Let's see how much difference there is from the command prompt. The make and model of the the network adapter and corresponding driver can have a significant impact on latency. Are you using identical adapters in both machines?

Yes they are the same adaptors. I will try the command prompt ping though.
