i have set up a peer to peer network (NO domain) with simple file sharing
disabled (ACT enabled). is there a way to prevent a user from logging into a
pc at the pc itself but allow the user to access files only from another
computer on the network?

i.e. a worker can access files that are stored on his boss's computer from
his own computer but cannot login to his boss's computer even if he has
physical access?

from what i understand, the only way to allow a user to login over a network
is when there is a user listed in Local Users and Groups. and once the user
is listed there, he can login to the computer itself.

On the PC that's doing the sharing try this:

Go to Start -> Run. In the Open box enter secpol.msc and hit OK.
This brings up the Local Security Policy editor.
Navigate to Local Settings\User Rights Assignments.
In the right hand pane find "Deny logon locally".
Right click this item and add the user who should be denied
access.
Close the editor.
Logoff and see if you can logon with the other account.

Note: If you're using the Welcome screen you won't see the icon
for that user account listed. If you're using the Windows 2000
style logon then you'll get an error message about that account
being unable to logon.
