i emailed the people who built my computer and they said...

As you are using OEM version of Windows ME Operating
System, it is not
possible to upgrade to Windows XP using the upgrade disc.
This is possible only if you are using a retail version of
Windows ME
Operating System.

Is that true?

i am not sure if i get an email when someone responds but
if not, could you plase email me and tell me? my email is
(e-mail address removed)

You can upgrade by using the upgrade CD, just boot the XP
CD, select install, the install program will detect the
currently installed ME OS and offer you the choice of making
an upgrade or even a clean install, in which case it will
wipe the previous OS, drivers and data files. You should be
able to upgrade. The thing you can't do is install to a
clean or new drive because the OEM restore CD is not seen as
a Windows CD.

No.

As Ken said, no it is not correct. In your case, you can use the upgrade XP
CD to upgrade or even to do a clean install.
IF you choose a clean install, the installer will see ME on your system and
will then clean install XP BUT if you should decide down the road to wipe XP
and reinstall clean again you will need another Windows OS as proof required
to use the upgrade vs. the full version. This will not apply if you only
need to do a repair however at some point after installing XP.

Good luck,

Ray
