QFE Desktop installer tool and Cryptographic service

D

dma

Hi all,

I've downloaded the 'QFE desktop installer tool' but I wasn't able to
get it functioning: when I try to run an XPPro KBxy-abc locally on my
XPe device, I get the error:

"Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure
the Cryptographic service is running on this computer."

Obviously, the Cryptographic service is installed and starded correctly...
Only one thing: when I try to open the property tab of such service, I
get the error "The specified device instance handle does not
correspond...", but by reading old posts and searching on google, it
seems to me that such error should have no consequences...

Any clue?
TIA

- Which XPPro patch were you trying to install? You did note that the
QFE Desktop Installer Tool is not documented to support patches from the
past, only those from after May 11?

- There is an old "issue" that XPE SP1, as it is, reports the wrong
version regarding service packs. A registry entry

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows]
"CSDVersion"=dword:00000100

fixes that.

Eberhard is on the right track on this one dma. If the QFE was created
before the desktop qfe installer was released then that package is using an
older (not supported) installer mechanism and will generate that exact
error.

The other potential casue mentioned about the known issue where some
installers will generate that same error on full XP is also valid. A search
of google on this error returned hundreds of hits. Here's just a couple,
follow the instructions on verifying the integrity of the system, the crypto
service and the signature of the updates:

you can modify the registry to "update" to the service pack 1
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows]
"CSDVersion"=DWORD:100
"CSDReleaseType"=DWORD:0
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion]
"CSDVersion"=String:Service Pack 1

then most of the QEFs can install on the image after FBA

There's also a QFE hat implements this key - grab Q842930 for the proper
fix, and yes, we picked this up for SP2.
