Q. I want to wipe and re-install my Win 2K, but have a few ???

Hi,

For several years, I like how my Win2k Professional, has held up, on
my dated machine.

I have no complaints, except one: I'm running out of space on my C:
drive.

I plant o re-partition the drive, or get a new one, altogether.
At that point, will I need to boot-uip disks?

That part confuses me. I think my machine is capable of booting from
CD, but I'm not sure. In the event I want to boot up the re-install
from the floppy disks, what steps do I need to take, to re-install Win
2K pro?

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

George, Dave has told you how to do a fresh install. You do have another
option, perhaps more, that will preserve your current system and all its
settings.

You must use a 3rd-party to resize your C: partition. A product like
PartitionMagic is designed to do this. This is all you'd have to do if
you have enough available (unoccupied by files) space somewhere on that
hard drive. You would first shrink the other partition(s), then move
them away from the C: partition, then enlarge the C: partition so it
occupies the newly available contiguous space.

If you are running out of space on that hard drive, you can always,
before doing the above operations, install a new drive as a slave on the
same controller or as master or slave on a second controller, create and
format appropriate partition(s) on that drive, copy one or more
non-system partitions from the old drive to the new, and rename the old
and new partitions so the system can find the files where it expects to.
All of this can be done within W2k. Then, run W2k for a while to make
sure this copying was successful. When you're sure, then delete some or
all the old partition(s) on the old drive; this will free up anough
space for you to enlarge C: to your heart's content, and the partition
deletions can also be done within W2k. Then, you can enlarge C: with the
sort of utility mentioned above.

Yet another option you have is to install a new drive and use a 3rd
party utility like DriveImage or Ghost to "clone" C: on the new drive,
in a larger partition than it now occupies. Using these is also quite
simple and reliable.

But do not make any mistakes! Mistakes are catastrophic; make sure you
understand each step you do with one of these utilities, and use it
correctly.

learned a few things, on the way.

The other option, regarding the paritioning software would have worked
too, but I didn't feel like going through all that, as I plan only for
another year for this box's existence.
