Q: Encoding video to WMV on Windows2000 platform.

Hi. I have Windows 2000 setup on my PC and would like to produce WMV
video files from my DV tapes. I understand that with Windows XP, you
get Moviemaker v2 and it seems to get good reviews for ease of use.

However, I don't have WinXP.

So I'm wondering if it's possible to get Moviemaker v2 for W2k? From
casual researching, it seems MM2 is exclusive to WinXP (I guess this is
MS's way to encouraging people to upgrade their OS).

If it's not possible to get MM2 for W2K, what about using the WMV9
Encoder software? Will Encoder9 produce WMV files that are comparable
to MM2? I'm thinking I can use Encoder9 to produce my WMV files and
then use another program (i.e. Adobe Premiere Pro) to cut/splice/etc.

Lastly, I'm curious whether Encoder9 will produce BETTER WMV files than
what you get out of MM2. From having worked with MM2 on another
machine, it seems that it used 1-pass encoding. I'm assuming that
Encoder9 allows 2-pass encoding along with other advanced techniques
that are hidden from the user in MM2 since it's aimed at ease of use.
Am I right?

Thanks for any help.

You're a little right in the audio area... Movie Maker 2 is limited to 2
channel stereo, and the Encoder can do the additional channel surround sound
stuff... but the video is comparable. You can make custom profiles for
either.

And yes MM2 is limited to Windows XP.

Get the latest version of Windows Media Encoder and you'll be able to
produce good WMV videos.

I don't use MovieMaker (even though i have XP) but i use the Windows Media
Encoder.
It does the lot and lets you set all the various options to your liking.

WME has more advanced options and when used correctly can potentially
produce better encoding results. However doing even simple editing in
WME is very difficult.

Although WMM2 cannot be used on Win2k platform, you can make MM1 to work
for basic editing. You can acquire MM1 by copying the "C:\Program
Files\Movie Maker" folder from a friend's XP machine and drop it in the
Program Files folder of you Win2k machine. Run moviemk.exe
