i'm changing mobo/cpu and wish i could just stick 200gb xp hd in, but i know
thats not right -i dont want to go thru data transfer (no other pc, anyway)
-should i just try to do a repair/reinstall of xp when i power on first time?
years ago i bought a 4gb hard drive off ebay for a win95 machine, and it was
a pull and hadnt been wiped -it loaded win98 up and ran just fine, except my
old pc thought it was the computer hd was pulled from -device manager had all
other brand name components and intel chip listed, though i had a k6 and none
of the things listed in my machine. wierd huh? i doubt it could happen with
todays pcs (xp,vista) --any ideas anybody? how long would it take to transfer
200gbs?

If you have no other way to transfer the data (using a second hard drive
or other means), then a repair install should work for you. The
following article lists the items that need to be taken into account
when doing this:

Yup. I did exactly that last August when I built a new machine. I
had years of programs installed on my drive that I couldn't/didn't
want to try to reinstall.

I cloned the old drive to the new one, and the XP repair install
worked fine when I installed the new drive into the new machine.

Make sure there is a full backup.
