Purchasing New

I want to upgrade my Windows from 98 to XP Pro. Am I
able to just place the new CD and it automatically
upgrades or is there more I need to do? (As you can
tell, I'm quite new to the computer scene!)

Be sure your data is well backed up.

When you put the CD in the drive while at the 98 desktop, after the setup
screen appears and you choose setup, be sure to choose upgrade as opposed to
new install or it will install separately from 98 and you'll have a dual
boot setup.

Before making this change, if you already have the XP CD, when the setup
screen appears, first choose, "Check System Compatibility" as you will need
to know if you have any hardware or software issues. If you don't yet have
the CD, download the upgrade advisor from the site below as it can tell if
there are potential issues. Don't overlook anything or pass it off as
trivial as the smallest seeming item can cause setup to quit and in an
upgrade, that might leave you without your 98 setup as well and you'd have
to start over from scratch and if you didn't back up your data, they'd be
lost.

Be sure to bring your applications up to date for XP and all your drivers
before moving to XP. It also would be best to uninstall any firewall and
antivirus software before upgrading as either application can interfere with
installation. If you CD burning software, it's advisable to remove that as
well and be sure you have versions compatible with XP for installation on XP
as most earlier versions of such software needed upgrading for XP, the same
for firewalls and antivirus software.

the internet connection (broadband?) be disconnected from the computer. It
takes only a few seconds to be infected with the Blaster worm!

In that case, pre-download SP1a and any other upgrades under 98.
I was fortunate to have received a CD with SP1a on it (separate from
my XP install CD), as I have dial-up internet.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective hardware
(particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still
support Win9x.
