punctuation after a LISTNUM

A few months ago, Stefan kindly sent me a sample containing the
correct field for numbering subexamples as in

(1) a. text
b. text,

and I've been successfully copying it into additional chapters ever
since (the field and its following tab).

But yesterday, it shows up as a) and b) instead of a. and b. ! When
I Show Field Codes, I see neither a period nor a right parenthesis,
and it doesn't seem to be part of something else that might be
inheriting formatting from somewhere.

Note that it has worked fine in at least six other documents since the
original one.

Note that LISTNUM used without a list name makes use of the *current* list
formatting, including any separators. For example, in a "1, 1.1, 1.1.1" type
of outline-numbered list, the following code:

1
{ LISTNUM \l 2 }

would display 1 followed by 1.1.

In other words, the key is to correctly set up the outline list whose
formatting the LISTNUM field should make use of.

If you want to use LISTNUM fields to insert a particular type of list
formatting anywhere in a document, you must name the numbering scheme, in
the Multilevel List (Word 2007) or Customize Outline Numbered List (Word
97-2003) dialog box.
