Public Folder - how to change location??

N

Neerav Kothari

I store my music, movies and pictures shared by other user accounts in the
public folder. I would like to change the location of the public folder to a
different drive so that, incase windows crashes and I need to reinstall, I
don't loose my data.

That works, but why edit the registry when you don't have to.

You can just create a new public folder anywhere you want it to be. Then, go
to the original sub folders - right click on each folder and change it's
location.

Recorded TV cannot be moved like this, and for me, that is the actual folder
that needs moving off the System drive.

I think altering the one registry key is quicker. There is another way to
do this described here, but I haven't tried it yet.

I agree that it is quicker. But a person who doesn't know how to do
something by using the accepted system tools has no right being in the
registry where he can trash his computer.

We, all of us who post here, have been neglecting to state the standard
warning when telling someone about registry manipulation.

CAUTION: Modifying the registry makes fundamental changes to the operating
system. Doing so incorrectly can adversely impact the systems performance or
make the system unusable. Do so with great care.

if i follow the registry settings (i have been playing with the registry
since XP) then my public folder will certainly change its location. but my
question is... when i happen to reinstall windows vista, how will i tell me
new copy of window to consider the shifted public folder as the default one?
because i guess then a new public folder in the original location will be
created. and with the new copy of vista too i would like the old shifted
public folder to be the default public folder. thanks.

just two more questions. i have a password protected user account in vista.
if i shift the local folder (documents, contacts, etc...) of my user account
to another drive
a) will other user accounts be able to access it?
b) incase it says access denied like it did in xp, then when i happen to
reinstall windows vista will it allow me to access it?

You do it after the fact by doing what you did initially. Until you do, you
will be using the default locations.

I would just copy the public folder to where you want it to be. Then I would
enter the properties for each folder in C:\Users\Public and change it's
location from there to the new location. After you are done you can delete
the contents from the initial folders so as not to have file duplication.
