PST maximum file size in outlook 2003

T

Thomas Lally

I thought the maximum file size in Outlook 2003 was 20GB or so. After
2GB Outlook says I reached the maximum file size.

what's wrong?

There is no exchange server anywhere in.

thank you

There are two potential PST file types in Outlook 2003. If you upgraded from
OUtlook 2002 or 2000, and didn't create a new PST file, you still have the
old format (with the 2 GB limit). If you created a new PST file when you
installed Outlook 2003, (or installed from scratch with no previous version
of Outlook on the computer) you should have a new PST format with the larger
limit.

To create a new PST select File, New, Outlook Data File. Make sure you don't
select the Outlook 97-2002 format.

HOWEVER, if you need to access the PST with previous versions of Outlook at
all, you need to keep the older style PST as the older versions of Outlook
can't access the new format PST files.

If you look at the documentation on the MS site you will see that the 2003 client now uses what is referred to as a .OST. this file only allows "up to and approaching 2GB" according to MS. I have it on personal use and experience wih this exact issue in our company that the actual cutoff size is somewhere near 1.75GB. Then you will not be able to keep your account in cached mode anymore.

An .ost file has always been used for offline folders in every version of
Outlook. What's new in Outlook 2003 is that .pst and .ost files can be
virtually unlimited in size. If a *new* .ost file is created (say with a new
profile), it will be in the new format. There is no way to convert an
existing file to the new format.
