I have downgraded from Windows Vista to XP on Sony VAIO notebook. Then
reinstalled Office 2007 SP1 and have copied the pst file back to the default
directory.
And i get the message that "Outlook.pst is not a personal folder file". Any
idea what to do?
Thanks in advance.

The default directory is the last place you would place a PST file since you
will often overwrite another.
You must provide accurate details on how you created, transported and are
trying to access this file for anyone to answer you. --

You may have corrupted the pst in whatever method you used in copying it, or
by overwritting an existing pst.
Does OL start, if not, use the mail applet in the control panel to configure
a new Profile - not copy - add a new data file & the accounts, & test.
Then copy your old pst to My Documents folder, if a cd was used check
properties of the file in explorer and turn off read only.
Start OL, File>Open>Data File.......browse to old pst

Before formating the computer i have just went to the directory where pst
files were stored and copied to CD 2 files (Outlook.pst and Archive.pst).
Then after installing Windows XP and Office 2007 i tried to add them using
Date File Managment option in File menu of Microst Outlook. message comes:
"The file D:\Outlook.pst is not a personal folder file."
If i run scanpst it does something for 30 sec and then saysThe Microsoft
Office 2007 Inbox Repair Tool does not recognize the file D:\Outlook.pst. No
information can be recovered.
The fle sizes are Outlook.pst 1.579 GB, archive 2.779 GB
Please help.

You cannot work with an OL data file stored on a cd/dvd
Copy both files to My Documents - do NOT copy to OL default location
In explorer examine properties of thes files and turn off the read only
attribute.
Then start OL & *open* these data files

That's because the files are on a CD. Outlook requires read/write access to
the files. Copy them to your HDD, remove the Read-only attribute if it's
set, and repeat your process. Be warned - do NOT overwrite any existing pst
files during this as you will likely corrupt your mail profile. Put them
somewhere other than the default location.

I copied it to C: derive and attributes are not "read-only"

Then your pst file is almost certainly corrupt. How did you make the copy in
the first place?

If you copied from cd, they would be, in any case if you are still unable to
open the pst within OL, or run scanpst on the file, it means your initial
method of copying failed.

You can use Inbox Repair tool which is used to repair corrupted file of pst. But if your file is badly damaged you may not able to repair it. At that time you can use some software. You can try a tool called Advanced Outlook Repair to repair your PST file. It is a powerful tool to recover messages, folders and other objects from corrupt or damaged Microsoft Outlook PST files.
