.pst backup contains folders and email but....

F

I recently did a reformat of my computer. I did a backup of my outlook
like I have a handful of times before. This time something was broken
along the way.
I did the scanpst repair and it was successful. After the repair it
says something like "pst contains 43 folders and 7354 email", which is
about right.
When I import it the new .pst into my fresh outlook all my contacts
are gone, all of my inbox sub-folders are missing, my notes are
missing, but all my sent items imported as usual.
I know the files are on the .pst. My question is A. Why arent the
importing? and B. How can I get these off this file and into my
outlook? Help!

Thanks

Instead of importing, use File > Open and browse to your PST. It's possible
to corrupt the PST by importing so you may want to run scanpst.exe against it
before you use Outlook to open it.

Thanks. I have tried this as well. It is the same as if I imported it.
I know they are in there i just dont know where. Is there a program
that can open up the guts of a .pst? If I could at least salvage a
couple of the important folders and the contacts It would be great.

Let's go back a step; how did you made a backup before the format? If by
exporting than it could very well be that you omitted those folders. A real
back-up is to copy the original pst-file and not my making an export and
take that pst-file.

Ok here is what I did
File
Import Export
Export to a file
Personal Folder File (.pst)
(Select folder to export from)
I then minimize everything by pressing the minus nxt to "Personal
Folders"so that only the "Personal Folders" Name and folder is showing
Check the Include Sub Folders Box
Click Next
Rename according to the date (Ex: 010108.pst)
Finish

When I did this originally it was business as usual.
I imported into my newly loaded outlook 2000 and it was missing a heap
of the folders and emails as described above and the program was all
but (and at times) at a complete hault.

I them used the scanpst repair tool at which time it fund some errors
in the .pst and fixed them stating it found 43 folder and 7892 items.

Scanpst does make a backup of the original folder before it repairs. I
just checked that folder as well and like the original it states that
it has errors but contains 25 folders and 7892 items... I am going to
repair the backup file and try again... but ,ake a backup of the
backup so I still have a copy of the original export...
All I know is that the file I have states it has at least 25 folders
and 6892 items, but when it is opened or imported it contains far
less...

Since you used the Export function, there is no way to verify that you
actually exported the data in question. It might be a hard lesson, but
always check what you've backed up before deleting an original. It's also
very interesting to see that you created a new pst-file via Export which
immediately got damaged. This means something else has been going on as well
like for instance; Outlook was still running when you backed up your
pst-export.

In the case of the last, you could try a commercial pst-recovery tool and
see if they can salvage more than scanpst.exe.

As for future reference;
