Proxy server keeps coming back

I have verified with my ISP that they do not use a proxy server, yet whenever
I start the system or change to a different user, in Tools/Internet
Options/Connections/LAN Settings, it has a check for "Use a proxy server...".
Here is the information for the proxy server:

http: localhost port 8081

The ISP suggested it may be Norton Internet Security doing it. My wife has
experienced numerous missing graphics on web pages recently so it raised a
red flag. I will also need to uninstall & reinstall Norton Internet Security
due to Intrusion Detection files corrupted.

sounds to me like a virus hit you. Was your antivrus up-to-date? Just hearing
about proxy settings that won't go away and a damaged anti-virus leads me to
that conclusion. Some viruses initially attack any popular antivirus software
you have to prevent updates from coming in and wiping them out.., And norton
is one of the biggest names....I've seen it happen before. Best bet is to
reinstall and update then scan. Report back after for any follow-up advice.

The Norton problem was because the Intrusion Detection files didn't install
properly, but I was able to get it uninstalled and reinstalled and it's
working fine. I did a virus scan with no problems. I also notice from time
to time Java things don't work. I had to wait till this morning to write a
reply because when I clicked the "Reply" link it wouldn't open the reply box.

I will have to write Symantec and find out if there is a proxy server mark
somewhere in the program, if not they there is some other malware present and
I will have to scan with several things.
