Proxy Configuration

MS AntiSpyware worked through our proxy fine, but this will not. I can't find
any settings. Any suggestions?

Does AutoUpdate, Windows Update or Microsoft Update work? If they do,
Windows Defender should as well, so perhaps you have a different issue.

How universal is this failure? I've had 3 initial failures to update out of
about 14 machines, so far.

In two cases, I was able to reverse the failure. In one case I checked the
IE proxy setting "automatically detect." In another case, I unchecked that
same setting.

Both machines were, in fact, on the same network behind an ISA 2000
transparent web proxy. Strange. I don't have a picture of what's going on
here at all yet.

All others will prompt for proxy authentication when accessing the internet.
As I mentioned, the update worked fine with MS Antispyware. If there were a
log file or error message produced, I would supply it, but what I can tell
you is that when I try to update, it does not detect my proxy settings and
subsequently request authentication.

The update mechanism in Windows Defender has little in common with Microsoft
Antispyware. It is designed to receive updates via WSUS, AutoUpdate, or
Windows Update.

If you are running WSUS on your network, you need to enable the new category
to make the updates available. If you are running SUS, I don't know the
correct answer, in terms of what happens (or does not!)

Error messages should be in the system event log with source WinDefend,
fwiw.

WSUS, AutoUpdate, or Windows Update are not currently used in our
environment; in fact, all of the update features are disabled. There are no
errors in the System logs. Is there a manual way to perform the update or
configure Windows Defender to utilize the proxy the same way as MS
Antispyware?

I have seen many other posts that would indicate that others are probably
having the same problem. Will the MS Antispyware way of update be available
in the newer version and/or will there be a way to manually update? Even WSUS
can be manually updated.

I'm quite certain that the beta1 update method will not be added to the
beta2 product.

There are several--not sure of the precise number--of different update
issues involving Windows Defender--they are not all the same.

I have not seen any indication of what, if any provision might be made for
manual updating. Security patches are now available as .ISO files, but the
Windows Defender signature updates are not in this category--they require
WGA.

I don't know what to suggest at this point--you've locked down all the
possible update routes available, as I understand it. When you say "even
WSUS can be manually updated" what does that mean? I know almost nothing
about WSUS.

I suspect you could implement WSUS and limit it to distributing just Windows
Defender signature updates--that seems like considerable effort, but perhaps
less effort than opening up the other update mechanisms to all machines.

I'm interested in why you wish to deploying defender, yet aren't deploying
WSUS? Seems like you are only addressing half the security problem with
malicious software.

WSUS takes roughly and afternoon to configure and setup. There is plenty of
documentation out there and the benfits are enourmous. Heck you can update
all of Microsoft's software with it, or not depending on what you choose to
do. As far as updating WSUS manually, I haven't had much luck with this
personally..and it is far easier to let WSUS do all the updating anyway.

From what I understand Defender is being targeted as a technology like
windows updates, centrally managed and runs in the background without user
interaction required 95% of the time. If you don't like this model I'd
suggest you look at other alternatives like Spybot.

i have the same problem with Jeff.
I dont find any setting to set proxy conf in Defender. since i am an
adminstrator so i know what i'm doing.
it is so..i dont know what to say if Defender is only used for computer
having direct connection to internet.
my computer behind firewall and proxy. when i'm using Anti Spyware (beta1) i
have no problem updating signature.
using defender, i cant updating anything, since my proxy use NO
AUTHENTICATION.
Maybe you can help us here....

Did you read the other responses to Jeff's issue?

Does Windows Update work for you on the machine which is not updating? Do
you get any error message? Do you have a WSUS server on the subnet?

OK - if you are getting the error code, the problem is not WSUS--WSUS is a
server service which network admins can deploy to control which patches are
distributed within a corporate lan. If such a service is available, Windows
Defender goes there for its updates--and if they haven't been enabled, the
update fails silently.

That is NOT your problem, however, since you get that error number. I'm
sorry to have to say that I don't have a solution for that error message--I
believe there are approximately 3 people in these groups with that error at
the moment, and I don't have a fix for it.

I'd recommend re-posting to a new thread, and putting the error message
number in the subject header. Microsoft is reading these threads, even
today, which is a holiday in the U.S.--and maybe we can get an authoritative
response, if we can draw attention to that error code.

WSUS is being planned for deployment, but we are a North American wide
company with 10000+ computers all over the US and Canada. Trying to get the
$$ for the servers and licensing and all the IT departments to work together
is slowing the progress.

Currently, we have SMS in place to patch machines with a relatively high
success. Some of the smaller offices are using WSUS with the free DB
licensing, but once we go for a NA wide solution, proper SQL databases will
be required.

What we need, which we don't currently have, is an application like Defender
to prevent against Spyware/Adware and like. As a large % of our users are
developers, what we don't need is the OS being updated automatically without
proper testing and planning.

i've solved my problem :)
go to command promp, and type "date" and "time"
enter current date and time
after that, try to run the defender and update it..it should work now..
