Protecting Word documents

I have a document that I have protected with Exceptions and selected the
group Everyone. On my computer it works great - I can edit all but the three
pages that are locked in Exceptions.
However, when I email the document, or post it to our shared drive it locks
the entire document and allows no editing (it states it is locked for
editing).
Also, is this backward compatible? We have several agencies yet to upgrade
to Word 2003. I've saved it to be compatible with 97-2002 versions of Word.

This feature is found only in Word 2003. Earlier versions will open the
document as completely protected.

thanks Charles. I was afraid of that.

Do you know if a macro or VB script can be written to protect these
exceptions?

You can protect for forms and only protect parts of a document. This is what
Word calls an "online form." Check this in help. For more about online
forms, follow the links at

Chapman's series of articles. You may also want to look at

Hope this helps,
