Editing a restricted document in Word 97/2002

R

Raman

Hi,

I have allowed only certain parts of a word document (Not a docx) to be
edited via Word 2007 in compatibility mode.

Problem i m having is when I open that document in WOrd 97 or Word 2002 It
says "This command is not available because the document is locked for edit"

Where as I am able to edit it when I open the doucment in office 2007?

What do i do? For your information, I went to Review | Protect Document and
selected Allow only this type of editing in the document and selected
everyone and then selected the area to be allowed for editing.

Please help....

The problem is that you have enabled a kind of protection (setting "Editing
restrictions" to "No changes (Read only)" and defining exceptions) that is
not supported in versions before Word 2003. You will have to change the
design, for example by using an "ordinary" protected form which is supported
in Word 97-2007.

Hi Raman,

The protection abilities of Word were revised in Word 2003. If you're using the 'Exceptions' choice in Editing restrictions to
highlight and choose what areas to allow for editing that feature isn't supported in earlier versions.

It's not clear why, if you set compatibility in Word 2007 to be Word 97 or Word 2002, for example) and save as a .doc file that the
compatibility checker isn't flaggin this as a problem.

You can insert section breaks before/after the areas you want to allow editing in and then protect the document for forms (or
tracked changes or forms) by Word 'section') would be available in the older versions as well.

editing 'regions' can be a bit of a pain. For example, if you use ctrl+A Word selects not just the editable
regions but areas you can't edit as well and greys out the editing options on the ribbon. (i.e. it hasn't been made smart enough to
only select the editable parts as 'all' when the restrictions are in effect <g>).
