Protecting only cells with formulas

I have a spreadsheet that I don't want people to be able to accidentally type or erase contents of a cell with a formula. If I protect the sheet and then go back and un-protect the cells that they can type in....that works for the cells with the formulas, but then the cells they can type in can not be sorted. The sort function is not available.
I need a way to either ONLY protect certain cells or to protect the sheet as noted above, BUT still be able to sort the unprotected cells. Can someone help? I've searched other areas here, and all I keep finding is a reference on what I've already done (which won't allow a sort).

Hi Bonnie,
You could just give them a background color to discourage them
from entering into such cells; however, there have been posted macros for
sorting of content within protected sheets.

One way is to just protect the userinterface

what version of excel do you have?
i have xp, when i protect a sheet theres an option to allow sort &
autofilter, i dont think below excel 2000 will have that option.

what about a macro to unprotect, sort and reprotect the sheet ?

Kind Regards,

Steve
