Protected Document Sections

The date in my document is protected so when I open a saved document it
automatically updates the document.
I don't want this, but beacause I use this protected document as a template,
I need the current date to appear when I open the template.
Please help.

You have a DATE field in the template. You need a CREATEDATE field instead.

Thanks. I gave the article a quick read. Still unsure if the template will
remain current date and the SAVE AS docs retain the creation date, but will
check it out.

When you insert a CreateDate field in a template, the date in the template
remains fixed. Every new document you create based on the template acquires
the date the document was created, and this remains fixed.

It won't matter what the MERGEFORMAT setting is, though this switch can
cause other problems. Believe me, the CreateDate field will do what you
want. Why don't you just try it?

It does work.
One last question: Should I save the form template as .dot? I assume that is
correct.
When the users SAVEAS I don't want them to have to change the extension to
..doc . If I make a shortcut from the desktop to the template I saved in
MYDocuments it looks as if when the user SAVEAS it will automatically be
saved as a Word doc.

That's correct. The default action of .dot files is New, which means that a
new document is created when you double-click on a .dot file either in
Windows Explorer or on the desktop.
