Protect my form - my lock button is greyed out

Hiya - I have been making a word document this morning and inserted some form
field boxes, and check boxes. I now want to protect it but the padlock button
is greyed out - does anyone know why? Please help - many thanks,Louise

Is this Word 2003? Does the document think it's a mail merge document, by any
chance? What if you start with a new document, will it work with that?
