Protect Document

Word 2003, several of us are having a problem with Protecting a Document--it
doesn't always let us access the features on the right side so it can't be
protected. Have checked Options/Securities section, nothing evident
 
Is it possible the document was a main mail merge document at one
time?

Go to View/Toolbars/Mail Merge to turn on the Mail Merge toolbar.
Click the first command, "Main Document Setup" and make sure it is set
to "Normal Word Document".
