Protect a form without blanking out entries

I was filling out a form with the protection on. I needed to edit the form
so I turned the protection off. Now when I reprotect the form it blanks out
all of the field entries I previously entered. How do I prevent it from
blanking out the field entries so I can finish filling out the form? I am
using the "Forms" toolbar and not the "Control Toolbox".

In recent versions of Word, you can use the padlock icon on the Forms
toolbar (but not Tools | Unprotect/Protect Document) to turn protection on
and off without resetting the form.
