Properties Window

I just discovered my recently acquired (via new computer) WINDOWS XP Home
Edition, doesn't display a "properties" window. That is if I open "my
computer" and right click on any disk drive and then click on "properties", a
window should open showing among other things a pie chart indicating used and
unused space on the disk. I think this system I've had for a couple of
months did this at first. Now if I click on "properties" in "my computer" I
get one line of text at the bottom of the "my computer" screen giving me the
used and unused stats, but no pie chart and no new screen. Is there a
setting somewhere that controls this that may have been inadvertantly changed?

Hi,

Are you right-clicking a drive, and clicking on "Properties"?
Do you have a screenshot of how the dialog looks like?

OK, I could probably do a screenshot, but I think I can describe it. I RIGHT
click on the drive icon in the "my computer" screen and get a drop down menu.
At the bottom of the menu is "properties". I then LEFT click on
"properties" and expect a new screen or window with, among other things, a
pie chart. Instead when I left click on properties nothing happens. I think
I get one line of text at the bottom of the my computer screen if I hover
over the drive tile/icon.

Don,

Well, the drive property sheet does not invoke in this case.

Are you running Windows XP Professional, with IIS installed? If so, read
here:

Also, see "W3ext Module" paragraph in this page:

As I stated in my original post, I'm running XP HOME EDITION, new enough to
iinclude SP2. The referenced articles seemed to be either for XP
Professional or pertain to ALL file and folder properties. I have just
discovered that this problem iis unique to HARD Drives. The Floppy drive
seems to work and I get a pie chart and tabs for whatever floppy disk I might
put in it. This new computer (DELL) came with an SATA (serial ATA?) drive
pre partitioned with two logical drives, neither of which respond with a
properties screen. The cabling is such that I cannot attach a regular ATA
(with flat ribbon cable) as an additional drive. I DO have an ATA drive
attached via a USB adapter which also does not respond with a properties
screen. But, I do get a properties screen for the CD/DVD drives.
Since the WINDOWS XP system came with the computer, Microsoft refuses to
consider my question (unless I pay them). I have not contacted Dell as I
didn't think this was a hardware problem. Perhaps now I will. Apparently
this is not a simple question of a setting somewhere except perhaps in the
registry.

No concrete clues, Don. I'd test (using ShellExView) if a third-party shell
extension is blocking the Property sheet for hard drives.
