When in Explorer, if I select the root drive eg C or D and right click
it and select properties, I get the properties box appearing.
However if I select a subfolder, right click it and select properties,
nothing happens, the properties box does not appear.
Can someone please help me? I also have this problem with sharing, the
sharing box refuses to appear. I suspect the two are related so if I
can fix one then maybe the other will be dealt with at the same
time......

Are you running Windows XP Professional, with IIS installed? If so, read
