Promise Ultra IDE Controller - update

C

Chuck Coty

I need to update the driver for the Promise Technology Inc. Ultra IDE
Controller to a driver specified by a Western Digital email support
specialist.

I have the driver exploded in a folder. I attempt to update the Ultra IDE
Controller using Device manager (going into the properties of the Ultra IDE
Controller & click on update Driver & of course pointing to the specific
location of this driver).

I point to the appropriate folder (XP) which contains 3 files (Ultra.cat,
ultra.inf & Ultra.sys), but it tells me that either "Cannot continue the
Hardware Update Wizard" because it could not find a better match than the
software that is installed.

I have taken this up with Western Digital but their email support told me
that this is a microsoft issue & provided no further advise. I need to run
this driver update to make certain that the drive connected to it is running
optimally.

Thanks for any help.

Hey Len,

Thanks for the help. I tried that also but it did not seem to do anything.
The driver is still listed the same way it was before I attempted this
method of installation.

Also, when I right-clicked on the inf file and clicked on install, I would
have thought I would have seen a window pop-up or some indication that the
driver is installing.

Still pretty confused about the process.

Thanks again, Len.

To get this to work do the following:
Go to the device manager and select the properties of the controller
Select driver tab, press update driver.
Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced). Press Next.
Select Don't search, I will choose the driver to install. Press Next.
Press Have Disk and browse to where you have drivers.
You will then get list of drivers available form the location, choose the one you want.

The problem comes from the driver not being digitally signed, I have the Promise Ultra 133TX and
this is the procedure I used to update. The only other thing you may have to do is to change the
driver signing settings. On the Hardware tab of system properties the is a Driver signing button,
change to Warn if not there already.
