Programs shorctuts disappearing from the Start Menu in Windows XP

Hi all

About 2 weeks ago a good chunk of shortcuts disappeared from the
Programs section of my Start Menu for no apparent reason. I am using an
HP d330 machine with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 on it. I
have the desktop set up to use the Windows Classic Mode.

I have regenerated a few shorcuts since then but then this morning it
happened again. I can't honestly say what triggered this behaviour. I
often clean up my recently used documents from the Start Menu and
occasionally uninstall programs using the Add/Remove Programs console
(I've done both this morning before I noticed the missing shortcuts)
but I have no idea whether either of these trigger a bug or a virus or
whatever it may be.

My machine is running the latest Norton Antivirus and all my virus
definitions are up to date. I did a scan first time my shortcuts
disappeared and no virus was found. I tried searching on Microsoft
support site but there is nothing useful there.

Anyone out there that's experienced similar or the same problem, any
help is appreciated.

Ah I forgot to mention that I have turned my Personalized Menus months
ago. I hate the damn thing...

Well, it turns out that one of our products had an installer which
would remove all the shortcuts and folders from the C:/Documents and
Settings/All Users/Start Menu/Programs folder and I happened to be
playing around with it for the last couple of weeks.
