programs running unusually slow

I recently run into a problem, hopefully minor. First the
specs - I have p4 1.5 1gig of ram 20 and 60 gig hard ..
windows operates off the 20. Anyway programs have
recently started to start VERY slowly and i notice a drag
in the whole computer esp on boot up ( boot up takes a
super long time to load - no clue why), such as not being
able to do anything until that program is finished
loading - ive disabled almost all of the programs in
msconfig for boot up - i defragmented the hard-drive -
changed all xp themes back to normal (logon screen -
themes) - and ive installed most or all of the updates
from the microsoft site including the sp1. Any
ideas/fixes/help would be greatly appreciated - btw once
the programs are running .. they work fine - just start
up slow .. thanks

Chase,
This seems to be a common problem as of late... are u running XP Pro or XP
Home? I'll watch this conversation to see if anyone comes up with a real
solution to this major (sorry, not minor) prob.

Hi,
If you have upgraded from a previous version of Windows, then this kind of a
slow-startup does happen with some users (it happened to me). You may want
to back up your data and clean install Windows XP.

If yours is a clean install of Windows XP, then you can optimise your
startup by using the bootvis tool from Microsoft.
