Programs open in Desktop, not C:\

Mister Max

I have several programs that will only open files on the Desktop. I
can't use the up arrow to get to the C: drive for the files I want. For
instance, I can't attach a file in Outlook Express (though I can drag a
file to OE). I can't open files (unless they're on the desktop) in
Thotor or UltraEdit. With Notepad, though, I can open files anywhere on
my disk.
This is a new problem since installing Norton Internet Security 2004 -
but it's still a problem if NIS and NAV aren't active. It's even a
problem in safe mode.

Win XP Pro, SP1.

What to do?

You can't use the up arrow because Desktop is the top of the tree

Instead look below Desktop for My Computer, double click it, now you should
be able to see the computers drives

Also you could type c:\ in the filename box and hit enter and it will jump
to C drive

But My Computer isn't there. Apparently I made it go away; how can I get
My Computer back?
Also you could type c:\ in the filename box and hit enter and it will
jump to C drive

This works for programs that allow typing in the filename; thanks for the
workaround.
