Programs in Sys Tray

There are some programs that seem to start up without my wanting them and I
see them in the sys tray. One example is Windows Messenger. How do I get
rid of them?

Windows Messenger has an option in its menu system to activate and
deactivate the application starting when Windows starts. If you have an
antivirus program that scans Windows Messenger messeages you may also
have to deactivate that option in the antivirus, as the antivirus may
launch the messenger.

Be carefull what you deactivate, as some programs might be connected
with maintaining your computer's security.

Try clicking and right clicking on the notification area icon, as some
applications offer startup option changes on pop-up menus or pop-up
windows. Some applications install with background applications like
media indexers that have automatic startup options in the main
application's install options or configuration menus. If offered, these
would be the prefered method to end the automatic startup.

As a LAST RESORT type "msconfig" in the taskbar Start menu's "Run"
dialog and uncheck the unwanted item on the "Startup" tab. It's
IMPORTANT for you to understand what you are deactivating. If you can't
tell from the three columns in the "Startup" tab listing, do a search in
an online search engine like Google or Ask.

I believe you meant "MSN Messenger".

Windows Messenger actually is a way to communicate across a network and is
accessed via computer management>services area...

You can go into MSCONFIG and click on the startup tab. Under the "Command"
column you will see c:\Program Files>Messenger>msmsgs.exe

That's the MSN Messenger program that is running on each startup. Uncheck
it, click apply, OK, and then reboot.

He's complaining about the programs that have icons in the task bar's
notification area. Windows Messaging (the one that spammers use to
generate pop-ups) doesn't appear there. Windows Messenger (the instant
messanger that is installed with Windows XP) does have an icon in the
notification area. The name similarity is almost as confuseing as
"basic" (the adjective) and "BASIC" (the programming language) which is
compunded by Microsoft spelling it "Basic" in the title of its windows
programming language.

The best way to disable Windows Messaging (the one with the spam
pop-ups) is to install Windows XP service pack 2 (SP2).
