Programs in Control Panel, and other files will not load

Over the last week or so, I have noticed files and programs on my
computer which have not seemed to be working at all when I double click
on the icon. When I do click on them, the computer acts as though it
it loading the file and then absolutely nothing happens...not even an
error message. These are some examples of the programs I have noticed
as not working:

Almost everything in the control panel: add or remove programs, system,
sounds, mouse, keyboard, display, wireless network, etc.

Games: Solitaire, Hearts, Minesweeper

Others not working when I click on them: ITunes setup file which I
recently downloaded from itunes.com.

Programs which do work from the start menu: MS Word, windows media
player, pinball (odd because the other games don't), Adobe reader.

There are others chich may or may not be working, but these are the
ones I noticed. From reading other similar messages, i came to the
conclusion that my problem arises from one of two things:
1) Addware or spyware
2) Unsafe removal of flash drives from usb

Bottom line is, I don't understand what to do to get my computer fixed.
I downloaded some registry edits files for .exe, .cpl and .lnk.
However, when I try to run the files, nothing happens. I have also
downloaded, installed and run ad-aware, which supposedly removes all
addware (it did quarantine 25 files, whatever that means?). This only
left me with more questions...how was I able to download, install and
run ad-aware but not able to install itunes???

Anybody else come across this issue? If so, can you recommend a
solution?

Thank You
Jake

downloaded registry edits?? hmm do you have anti-virus? i would be
cautious of what i let modify the registry. anyways, i would run a scan
disk and check the drive for errors, then, if that doesnt help run the
windows repair utility.

Thank you Flamer.

I do have McAfee Security Center which has an anti virus component. I
ran the scan disk through McAfee and found 2 files...they could not be
deleted for some reason, so I had Mcafee quarantine them. (Not sure
what it means to quarantine a file...do I still need to delete them
somehow?)

Anyway, I am now looking for a "Window Repair Utility". Do I have this
on my PC? If so, where is it located, and is there anything I should
lok for when I run it?

Thanks!

Kyle, I am still waiting for further instruction too.

Lat night I actually tried to do a system resort back to a previous
date, but i got an erro messages saying that my computer could not
restore back to the date I selected. I tried this 5 more times for
other dates, and I received an error for all of the tries.

Could ad-ware be doing all of this???

Quarantining a file means its put somewhere safe has has its virus
disabled, yes you should still delete it but do it through the AV
programme rather than just clicking on it and deleting it.

have you got yoru XP cd? put it in the drive, retsart computer and you
should get a repair xp option, run through that and see if it helps.

Flamer,
Actually, I just got the computer a couple of months ago and it did not
come with and XP cd. Is there a different workaround?

The only way to do an xp repair is with a cd, instructions for a repair
install are here: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

mabe there is another way to fix your probem, click start/run type in
eventvwr and hit enter, click each header on the left and look through
the logs for things with red error sings or yellow exclamation signs if
there are any can you paste in what they say, try to find ones that may
seem relevant to the problems you are having (ie. can't execute
program)

When I try to run "eventvwr", absolutely nothing happens. The run box
just disappears. Any other ideas?

Ok try this: Right-click on My
Computer, select Manage, and you'll find the Event Viewer tool under
System
Tools.
