Can't Uninstall from Add/Remove Program in Control Panel

F

Fran

I recently installed a D-Link USB Phone Adapter for Skype (Model DPH-50U).
Actually, I installed it twice because the program did not work effectively.
It still doesn't!

So, I want to uninstall both (two do show up in Control Panel) and then
re-install again using updated drivers (not sure how that is accomplished
either). However, I cannot uninstall either from Control Panel or by going
to Start>All Programs>DLink product> uninstall. When I click
uninstall...nothing happens.

According to D-Link support this will necessitate my going into the
Registry...which scares the heck out of me...from what I have read!. Can
anyone help me remove/uninstall both versions of this program? All help is
appreciated. Thank you in advance. Fran

To me - it sounds like you are getting the help you need from those who
should be giving it (D-Link Support.) They are your best bet at this point
for making this software function on your computer and clearing it out
properly.

They should have (or may need tro create) a program cleanup utility. Many
companies have had to do this because of poor planning.

With all due respect I would not have posted here if I were getting help. I
am sorry to say that D-Link support was totally ineffectve. They could not
help at all. In fact, they got me into this mess when I followed their lame
telephone instructions.

I am looking for a step-by-step or some kind of methodology to uninstall
this product.

Hi Fran,
If you are desperate for a solution then firstly, let me tell
you that there are some good [free[ programs out there to clear unwanted
programs that have forgot to include a functioning uninstall option from off
your system(search google: uninstallers). If you want to do it yourself
then I'd do it with some care.

1). Be sure and create a System Restore point first.
2). Delete the program's folder from within "C:\Program Files".
3). Start the program Regedit.exe (I'm going to come into some stick here)
by typing the same into the "Run" box. Try to look for a key with a similar
name to that of your program (ie D-Link) and delete it. There might be one
under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software these are
the two locations software puts it's settings.
4). Next type msconfig.exe into the "Run" box and go to the startup tab, if
anything by a similar name is listed then uncheck it.
5).Delete the start menu item listing it and that's about all you can do.

The free programs I was talking about automate this process and give you a
reverse option should things go wrong. I strongly advise you to look for
one of these.

PCWorld magazine recommends both AppRemover & Ashampoo.

With all due respect - this is a Windows XP support newsgroup. Your problem
*is not* with Windows XP. Windows XP may be the Operating System you chose
to run with, but you chose what to install on top of it and all support for
those products *should* come from those who created/sold said product. In
your case - D-Link.

Essentially - it comes down to this - if they are not giving you the support
you should be getting for their product - you should return their product
and demand your money back. It's unlikely to get better as time goes on and
it gets further and further frm your original purchase date and their
product life-cycle gets closer to termination for said product.

This is a peer-to-peer support newsgroup centered around Windows XP. Equate
it to (in some cases) an Apple "Genius Bar". You can come in with your
macintosh and they will assist you with your Apple products. However - it
is unlikely they would be as helpful if you walked in with your macintosh
laptop and your Zune player and had questions about the Zune. ;-)

Again - you are looking for step-by-step instructions to uninstall a product
that has nothing to do with Windows XP other than the fact you chose to
install it on a Windows XP system. I did not write the code that installed
the product. I don't know what your backup situation is or if you tried
just reinstalling (over top) of itself, rebooting, trying to remove what you
just did through the Control Panel (Add or Remove Programs) and then
rebooting into safe mode and restoring (using System Restore) to a date
before you ever tried to install said product.

Hopefully you are using all the tools Windows XP gives you (System Restore,
Backups, etc) and can thus go back to a date before this third party product
was installed on your system easily so you can return it or at least use the
fact you will return it to get some actual support.

My comment was honest - you have a product that you installed from a third
party vendor, yet you come to a Windows XP peer-to-peer support group to ask
a question about said third party product. It's sad that you cannot get
help from the vendor - and I think you should get mad, I think you sheould
get loud, I personally hope you get your problem straightened out with them;
But this newsgroup is not for help with said product.

You can try the system restore thing - the installing over itself just help
ensure the proper files (of a well written application) are in place for
removal.

You can try to use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/290301) to try and get it out
of the Add or Remove Programs so you might get a good install out of it (it
does not uninstall the product!)

You can combine those two, use the cleanup utility, reboot, install the
product again, reboot, uninstall the product through control panel, reboot
into safe mode and restore to a date before all this started.

Anything *specific* to said product - that is between you and the vendor or
possibly any kind soul who happens to see your post about this product in
this unrelated newsgroup and decides to attempt to help you because they
have first-hand knowldge or expertise on it and just happen to be hanging
out here instead of the D-Link forums.

Now maybe you thought my signature (used for years) was directed towards
you. Wasn't. At least not intentionally.

Which brings up your other option:

Now is a great time to point you to one of the easiest ways to find
information on problems you may be having and solutions others have found:

Search using Google!

I thought AppRemover centered mostly around 'security apps'?
http://www.appremover.com/about.html

I thought the Ashampoo product was more of a monitor/remove based off
monitoring utility.
http://www2.ashampoo.com/webcache/html/1/product_2_0803___USD.htm

I could be wrong on both counts.

I think the System Restore is probably still the best route. Something
along the lines as I posted about before. Using the Windows Installer
CleanUp Utility to fool the system into thinking it was uninstalled,
installing the software again (latest version - straight from download
perhaps), rebooting, uninstalling properly, rebooting into Safe Mode and
doing a system restore before this whole nightmare began and returning said
product to the vendor for a full refund.

Seconded.
